Police Minister Bheki Cele said on Wednesday that 5 South African Police Service (SAPS) members have been arrested in connection with links to cash in transit (CIT) heists in the preceding 24 hours.

Cele was attending a briefing in Parliament on a number of high profile cases on Wednesday, including the Steinhoff saga, the Verulam Mosque attack, and the recent bomb threats in KwaZulu-Natal.

According to Cele, other “active” suspects in the country’s CIT scourge appear to be from Botswana and Zimbabwe as well as South Africa.

In June, Cele said police will turn the tide against CIT heists using an “unconventional” approach.

In July, police said their efforts to combat CIT heists were paying off with 61 percent fewer robberies in June than in May.
