New iPhone 7 Leak Reveals Massive Apple U-Turn
It appeared we knew everything about the upcoming iPhone 7. But might we have to think again regarding its most controversial omission?
According to credible Japanese site Mac Otakara, Apple had a last minute change of heart and decided it will include a headphone jack on both the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus.
“At Computex Taipei 2016, many manufacturers showcased their new Lightning audio adaptors, and it seems there has been rumors that the headphones to be included with the new iPhone 7 series will still come with its own headphone jack as usual, and that a Lightning headphone jack adaptor will also be included in the package.”
Interestingly, Mac Otakara also backs up the recent talk of a second set of speakers being added to the top of the phone. The site claims this will be a “monaural system” – aka single channel mono, as opposed to stereo output.
Lastly it also reiterates that 256GB is likely to be the new top of the range storage system, though hopefully the biggest consequence of this would be finally putting the base level 16GB option out to pasture in favour of 32/128/256GB tiers. Fingers crossed.
My take? My own sources have not heard news of an Apple headphone jack U-turn, but given the company tests multiple variants of its upcoming iPhones each year it can’t be ruled out that models with and without the headphone jack are still being put through their paces.
That said Apple must be close to a decision. iPhones sell at such a scale that production needs to be ramped up 2-3 months in advance, which is right about now. As such I suspect the supply chain links which will inevitably appear next month should give us a definitive answer.
Personally I hope Mac Otakara is right, but even if the headphone jack is kept for the iPhone 7 I can’t see it remaining when the far more radical iPhone 8 appears next year…
