About 400 buffaloes were discovered dead as a result of drowning Wednesday afternoon.

The incident occurred in the Chobe River in Namibia.

The Ministry of Environment and Tourism said it is suspected the buffaloes were running away from a threat from the Botswana side.

While they were running in panic, in an attempt to cross the river, a stampede occurred.

It is suspected they were being chased by lions.

Some Villagers inĀ  the area flocked to the river to collect buffalo meat.
