Woman confesses to sleeping with her dead husband for 5 months after his death
Despite the fact her husband passed away nearly five months ago, former Neighbours star Melissa Bell is adamant he’s still very much by her side.
Speaking to New Idea, the 43-year-old – who has turned her Gold Coast home into a shrine to him – confessed that she still sleeps with the ghost of her late husband, Gary Dickinson, even revealing that his clothes remain in the wardrobe and he sits down to dinner with the family every night.
“He’s everywhere in the house and I do still sleep with him,” the actress who played Ramsey Street’s Lucy Robinson explained in the emotional interview.
“I will always be Gary’s wife. I made a promise to him as he was dying that we would be married forever.”
Gary passed away at age 57 on February 13 this year after suffering a heart attack which left him in a coma for 93 days.
And now, Melissa, along with their children Jonathan, 15, Isabella, 12, William, eight – and her son Dylan, 19, from a previous marriage – have vowed to keep Gary’s memory alive.
A giant portrait of Gary takes pride of place in the living room, with candles and treasured possessions – including his wedding ring and watch – surrounding his ashes.
“His ghost or his spirit, whatever you like to call it, is definitely still with us and that gives me comfort, because I don’t feel so alone,” says Melissa, who was married to her husband for 15 years.
“When you walk through the door, Gary is the first thing you see. The shrine which the kids and I built together is where he used to sit. He’s everywhere in the house and all around us, which is nice. He’s just on a different journey now.”
Despite acknowledging that she needs to “move forward,” Melissa – who recently made a brief return to Neighbours – admits having Gary’s presence so closely enshrined in her home is a source of comfort.
“I say ‘hello’ and talk to him all the time, just the way I always would. He’s helping us along and he’s very much a part of our lives.”
